I'm A Better Boss Then You

I was watching a TV news program this morning and they were discussing the virtues of who make better bosses men or women. As you can imagine, half the panel thought women made better bosses and the other half of the panel felt men were the better bosses.

It got me to thinking; who were my favorite bosses over the years? I perused my mental Rolodex of all the bosses I have had and one by one it became clear to me. I have had horrible male bosses and horrible female bosses but by far and large the best managers I have ever had the pleasure of working with have been women. That whole "women can be moody bitches" stereotype simple didn't exist. For whatever reason, my female bosses have all been decisive, commanding, smart and compassionate all at the same time. Most of the male bosses I had were OK but we simply didn't connect for whatever reason, with the exception of one.

So, my friends, if you have never had a woman boss you have really missed out. If you currently have a male boss tell him that this situation doesn't work for you anymore and you no longer want to report to him and must switch bosses immediately. Who do you think make better bosses, men or women?

This made me think back over all my jobs and I came to the conclusion all the bad bosses I've had have been men. The women have been, if not marvelously gifted, at least decent human beings.

Hmm, I've had my fair share of good ones and bad ones over the years. Thankfully I've not dealt with the moody, irrational female boss. I think that the men haven't been the greatest, but they did help me to learn and cut my teeth in tough environments. The best has been my current boss, who happens to be a woman. She's the most interested in helping me develop skills beyond my current position and she's the most invested in me.

I think each has its pros/cons. I've had some moody/fickle female bosses and some unsympathetic/too direct male bosses. Men can be all about the business which can be good for promotion potential but women can have a more well rounded understanding of things which is key if you are a woman who might one day be a mother or need to stay home b/c of painful cramps.

I try to support women as a rule. I even look for doctors that are female.

However, I work in a male dominated industry, so I have to go WAY back to college to remember a female boss. She was cool though. Actually, too cool to keep her job - more of a fun boss.

I am a woman, so please forgive me for saying that I hate having female bosses. Now, I haven't been as lucky as you where I had great female leaders. In my life the men were usually the ones that were straight-shooters and didn't drag emotions into the mix. Plus, they didn't act like they had anything to prove.
