I Didn't Think People Like This Existed

One of my all time favorite artists (and crushes) has always been Prince. I love that man unconditionally and as soon as he is done with all those beautiful supermodel types he'll realize they're not good for him and it's me he really loves and come to me but I digress.

I never thought I would ever run across a human being that didn't know Prince's work, namely Purple Rain. I didn't know such people existed.

I was talking to a few people I work with and we somehow got on the subject of Prince. I, of course, mentioned my undying love for the movie and sound track Purple Rain. This young chick had the audacity to say to me, "What's Purple Rain?"

I looked at her for a minute because I could not process what she had just said. I have never heard those words spoken, EVER. Then I gave her a look that said 'Are you freaking kidding me?'

Needless to say I feel ancient right now. I can not wrap my brain around the fact that there is actually a generation of people that do not know about Prince's work. Wow!

Little prepubescent twit!

umm, I could take her my poster that someone who shall remain nameless stole for me from the movie theater if you think it would help...

Sandi can bring the poster and I can do the dance at the end of the When Doves Cry video. I still remember every step!!! LOL!

A younger friend of mine was over and 13 Going on 30 was on and she thought it was so unrealistic for people to remember the movies to the Thriller zombie dance. Needless to say, when I got up and did it, she was shocked!

You should buy her a copy and ask her to share it with her friends- watch it & pass it on. Purple Rain will live on forever.

That is really weird because I had the SAME conversation this weekend and some young chick also didn't know who Prince is! Weird.

OMG!! I'm 22 years old and I've LOVED Prince Rogers Nelson since I was 2 years old. Purple Rain is my favorite movie of ALL TIME. I have the love symbol tattooed behind my right ear.

This chick saying she doesnt know what Purple Rain is needs to be schooled about Mr. Purplebadass. Not knowing who Prince is is like blasphemy.

This has nothing to do with Prince, but something to do with youngsters innocent and hilarious comments:

My niece and my sis were watching old vids on Utube and My sister found "Bad" by MJ. My 12 year old niece did a double take upon reading that and she blurted out "Micheal Jackson?"
"Yep." says my sis.
"But... How come he's white now?"

We looked at each other and busted our guts laughing... just the incredulous way she spoke cracked us right up.

It's because their parents didn't have the good sense to pass such things along. My girls, in their early 20s, not only know him but love him.

Someone the other day was talking about how a coworker didn't know who Bruce Springstein was. I can understand not liking an artist, but to not know who they are? Especially someone like Prince or Bruce? WTH?

The film "Purple Rain" seems to have been entirely forgotten now, and is not aired much (if at all) on those cable channels that love to rerun old movies all the time.

But I would be surprised if this person has not at least heard the song "1999".

That makes me feel old too. It hasn't been that long since he had a hit has it?

I have heard of Purple Rain, of course and I have heard the song. But I have never seen the movie. I never liked Prince. He had a few songs I liked, but I never found that androgenous image appealing.

So I am not young, but I know little about Prince.

These kids don't know Purple Rain??

I've never seen Purple Rain, just liked some of the songs.

So some of it is just the age difference, and some of it is well....

Some of these musicians and actors just decide to shoot themselves in the foot. We're all into Prince, and then he doesn't want to be Prince anymore, he wants to be a squiggly line. There was all this "the artist formally known as Prince" crap. People lost interest. Don't do this crap, we don't care about it. Just get in the studio and record stuff, and keep your little mental problem to yourself.

The first time something like this happened to me was the first or second season of American Idol. I said something to a Highschooler about one of Paula's songs. She looked at me and said, "She was a singer?" Yep, I felt old ;)

HAHAHA! I've had that happen to me more times than I care to remember!

Wow - she never heard of Purple Rain? That is insane. I guess I should feel old now too, but she's the one that is crazy - not us!!

Ugh...I hate those moments. Since I work with high school students those moments happen on a daily, sometimes hourly basis. They so missed out on the 80's era...and Prince...really!
