What is Up With That?

Ok, there is something I really need to understand. I'm fighting an age old battle around here. What the hell is up with men and the remote control? I'm just asking. Why is it that men CAN NOT……I repeat...CAN NOT sit through a damn TV show without flipping the channels at least 12 million times during the course of the show.

Men, please tell me what you fascination with the remote is all about. I just want to freaking understand. I cringe when a commercial comes on because I know I inevitably must deal with the obligatory channel surfing. I know we have 120 channels but must we rush to see ALL of them within a 2 minute span? Must we?

Can we please just leave the TV on ONE channel?

So men…please tell us what the deal is….that is if you can put the remote down long enough to type a response.

Men are just freaking annoying all around. Not just with the TV remote. We are not huge TV watchers so mine is not bad with that area, but in the car, holy god!! We have sirius, 199 channels and we have to hear what is playing on all channels until he finds what HE wants to listen to. I am never allowed to change the channel.

OMG that drives me crazy to no end, no end I tell you. Red Rangers dad use to do that all the time. I told him to give me the remote and one day he smiled. Like a crazed mad man.

He disassembled the remote and said when you can put it back together you can do what you like with it. Hence I learned you couldn’t reassemble a remote by cracking it against let’s say……

The remote was mine ever since!!!!!

Then Joe came along and getting him out of that habit is like housebreaking my dog.

Once upon a time, we didn't have a remote control, so it wasn't a problem.

The current remote control is a piece of crap that doesn't work half of the time. So it isn't much a problem right now either. Once you've found the program that you want to watch, it's just best to leave it alone for fear that it will refuse to work when you want to go back to your program.

But when we're in a motel he's back to the channel surfing.

I think it's always the worry that there may be something better going on...

Scary.

Cause that's how I feel about men and dating. They can't commit because they're afraid a better girl is around the corner.

I don't know if it is just men who do it. I am a remote master too. And I do that commercial surfing thing too. LOL

It's ANO! Just letting you know I've switched domains!

Hide it, they won't get up and look for it, nor will they get up and change the chanel.

lol @ this post

IDK, I usually don't watch regular TV. But when I am watching a basketball game, like last night, I always have to switch the station back and forth.

I feel like I am missing something. I went from the NBA game to an NCAA game to another NCAA game to CNN to a channel to see if anything else is on, all the way back to the NBA game.

I agree with you, its bad like that.

@ wrknprogress: You do have a point.

Don't let SSC fool you. She's all over changing the car radio stations like a hummingbird on crack.

As for the remote, what's the sense in watching commercials? And there are like 500 channels to watch. We're goal oriented, dammit.

i am not feeling this post. i know women that do the same thing. i am a dude that only flips back and forth when there are simultaneous programs on that i wanted to see. ie: two sporting events or something like that.

whats wrong with checking the score of a game or seeing an update on school closings.

though im pretty cool with you, this is not a fair post. (sticking my tongue out at you)...lol

I'm a woman, but I channel surf too, if I'm not watching on the DVR and can forward. BUT, I'm a hypocrite, and I can't stand for guys to channel surf. I get frustrated because they flip when I might want them to pause. It's a control thing. LOL.

Oh you should TOTALLY put this question to Slick & Chuck! They'll give you the info you need!

But seriously, WTF, man?

Sorry, in my house it's my wife that clicks. I think it's because of the ten minute (seems like it) commercial breaks during shows, but we always seem to miss the first minute back by the time she gets around to what we were watching in the first place. When it's me I just zone out waiting for the show to come back on.

I'm laughing so hard I'm crying!!!

When my son was learning to crawl I took many items and spread them out on the bed... a remote, a pot, a small box, a stuffed animal etc.

I did this at random on several different occaisions, always changing the locations of the items and let him crawl to what he wanted.

Don't be so hard on 'em honey.

It's in their genetics. ;o)

The older I get, the more I realize I will never understand men - not ever - they are totally the opposite of everything I believe in. I need to just get rid of them all.

Most of us make use of the commercial break. Men just find any reason not to leave the sofa

hahaaaaa girl I need your email so I can send you the remote they all want!!! hahahaa

I feel you though it drives me nuts too but I guess it helps now that I'm single LOL I don't worry about that anymore!

by the way you've been tagged!

LOL. I know. I have an uncle who will camp out on the sofa with a 27" TV, a portable one and the radio ALL on at the same time. And he channel surfs the big TV. It is noise overload sometimes.

Short attention span and greediness is what I call it. LOL.

I'm feeling this post.

I was once at my mother's house. She has a room with two TV's side by side, and a comfy chair that gives you the proper Captain Kirk feeling, with its multiple remotes.

There were 5 shows I wanted to watch at that moment. Using both remotes, I managed to watch 3 shows on one set and two shows in the other, constantly flipping back and forth at the right time on the sets.

It was kind of intense. I never attempted that again.

I wish TV remotes had a "Scan" button that made it change channels automatically every 10 seconds, like most car radios do. That would be a nice feature.

this is exactly why my hubby and I have separate TV's and our own DVR's. He would drive me nutso!!!!! And I like control of the remote. ;)

it's called ADHD...and I admit, I'm a suferer.

Documentaries (which usually come on with no commercials on History Channel, Science Channel, etc.) is music to calm the savage beast. Sports is also good.

Now if you're watching a DVD? No channel surfing.

So my suggestion is to 1)Get to know dude better to find out what can hold his interest. 2)Watch movies whenever you can, and 3)[perhaps most importantly] understand that that's just who we are and what we do. The sooner you can live with that, the more peaceful your life will be.

It is not just men. My friend with the huge boobs/roommate does the same thing. I can't watch shows with her at all- it's like the TV induces a new form of ADD or something.

CarmenSinCity said...

Get a DVR or a Tivo so that you can fast forward through the commercials. I hate it when I'm not in control of the remote - I am definitely a control freak.
