Oh That Scares Me

When I was very young, maybe 9 or 10 my aunt and her boyfriend took me to see The Exorcist at the movies. I had no idea what we were going to see at the theater I was just happy my aunt and her boyfriend took me out for the day to hang with them.

We get to the theater, we find our seats and the movie eventually starts. I’m watching this young girl on the screen turn from a cute, sweet little girl to a beat up, green, foul mouth, vomit spewing devil and quite frankly it scared the bejeesus out of me.

I watched most of the movie through the cracks of my fingers covering my eyes so that I could be ready at a moments notice to shut those fingers tight if something scary happened.

By the time we left that theater I was a nervous wreck. Every little noise had me jumping out of my skin. I was so unnerved by that movie.

My younger sister and I shared a room so when I finally got home that evening I immediately jumped in her bed and slept with her. The monster might get me and there was no way I was going to sleep in my bed alone that night.

Now, many years later I love horror flicks but there are certain movies I’ll stay away from like The Exorcist, The Omen and others that are similar. Those movies still scare the bejeesus out of me.

I think because the battle between good and evil…..God and the Devil is just too real to me to watch that unfold on a movie screen.

I can watch Jason, Mike Myers or Freddie Kruger because they are not real to me. The whole plot and story line is so far fetched that I can enjoy watching them but some person having demons possess their body is just way too much for me.

So even today, any horror movie I see can not have anything to do with God, or the Devil or folks being possessed or any of that stuff. You’ll see me sitting there with my fingers covering my eyes the whole time jumping at every little thing looking for someone to sleep with that night so the bad monster can’t get me.

I think something is wrong with me because that movie didn't scare me. I have issues :D

It's funny you say this because I was so scared to read "The Exorcist" for the same reason when I was younger. It was too real and I was afraid that if I read the book, it would happen to me. Strange huh?

your aunt didn't have my sense taking you to that movie. I don't like horror movies and some true story movies freak me out.

I do enjoy horror films, but I'm with you. When it's about Satan or possessions, I can't watch. If I do, I'll be scared for days!! After seeing Emily Rose a few years ago, I realized that I can't take it!

I know.

I'm the same way about "30 Minute Meals with Rachael Ray."

Scary shit.

I have issues with the Exorcist and the Omen but I still feel compelled to watch as well as House on Haunted Hill. HOWEVER, the other movies like HellRaiser, Friday the 13th etc come on, I refuse to watch. I watched HellRaiser with my jacket zipped over my head as a kid only to keep peeking. Horror movies and I = not mixy things.

You got to see Exorcist in theaters???

LUCKY!

Agreed. The Exorcist frightened me as a kid because it was the first time I'd ever seen a moving, 3-D rendition of the devil. All that church-raising and that was the first time.

Now I live in DC and I've gone up and down those Exorcist stairs in Georgetown countless times...

A long, long time ago -almost about the time that Edison invented the light bulb or well, 1951 -still well before your time, you youngster, you, the little girl who lived in the basement apartment in the building adjacent to my aunt and uncle's place (where I was living at the time) and her Dad invited me to go see a movie with them. My Mom happened to be there at that time and she allowed me to go, thinking because I was about 7 years old and the other kid was around 5 years, that her Dad was taking us to see some kiddy stuff. However, it was the movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and I was already afraid of the dark as it was so when I went to bed that night, I had nighmares out the yazoo about aliens coming to get me. Had those same nightmares for moths afterward too. My Mom was totally pissed at that "Grown man, imagine!" taking two little kids to see such stuff! Never liked sci-fi or alien junk movies at all for the rest of my life!

I am almost 36 years old & have never seen, nor will I EVER watch, the Exorcist. Nope. Nuh-uh. The movies that scare the beejeezes out of me are ghost movies, b/c that is real in my life and I stay spooked for days.
