May I Help You?

Ok, first, let me state that I strongly believe that everyone needs to have a healthy dose of self confidence. We all need to feel good about ourselves and that we are worthy of greatness.

With that said, some people take this thing to a whole new level. Case in point, I have a girlfriend that works at Boscov's as a sales associate. She decided to go out one night several months ago to let off some steam and have an exciting ladies night out. In doing so she met this gentleman that she became completely inamerate of. They began to spend quite a bit of time together.

She would call me on a regular basis exclaiming how great he was and how much she liked him.

Well, what's the problem you ask? Well, after the "honeymoon" stage wore off, he suddenly wasn't good enough for her any more. Why you ask, because dude was a department manager for Walgreen's.

When she was explaining her side of things to me I just looked at her with a blank stare. Then I asked her, "Don't you work at Boscov's?"

She replied, "Yeah. Boscov's is cool. It's way higher on the food chain then some Walgreens"

I just blankly looked at her. I mean really...You work retail...he work retail. Are you kidding me with this? At least he's a manager of a department. Your ass is following people around asking them if they need help and picking up their unwanted clothes from a fitting room. Why do you think you are better then he is? Please!

Give the guy a break.

Oh my god that shit is funny girl! You are right! This girl should realize that her and the guy have tons in common and they sound pretty great together. And, just for the record, Boscov's isn't all that great. I mean, I could see if she was working at Nordstrom or something - sheesh!! ha ha

what? people are SO weird sometimes about this stuff.

That is funny.

As someone who has a professional job, I totally look for someone who does something different. I like retail workers, blue collar guys, salesmen.

Maybe we all want what we are not??

Even though the guy works in a Walgreens, the both of them can work to build each other up. Maybe they can both improve where they work. Sometimes it's not all about what the person is doing now, but if they have dreams and goals they may just need a little help getting there. Like you said, at least he is a manager. It's possible he can upgrade her to a better job one day.

That's not self confidence... that's just plain snobbery!

Okay, no clue what a Boscov is (did I spell that right, I've already forgotten the name) but everyone knows what a WalGreen's Drug Store is...puleese...she should first get real...then someone furnish her with a ladder so she climb down from those high expectations she has!

Wow, she's full of herself. I once dated a guy who worked at Burger King. I was 16 and he would give me free fries. It was love until he quit!

LMAO!!!!! That is hilarious! I'd like to see the sales food chain she is grading her man on. I suppose being a Penney's manager is more her caliber. I am surprised you didn't bust out laughing at her ridiculousness! LOL

Oh please....at least he had a job!

Lol! Well dang.

That is a riot! Talk about ego inflation there with the Boscov's job. And heck, after all if he is a manager, he moving upward then. Maybe she was afraid he was way higher on the food chain that she was and couldn't handle that aspect but had to make it sound like the problem was really his job being lower than hers. Anyway you cut it, the entire aspect is ludicrous to dump someone for a reason like that.

I am so with you on this...why judge, if he treats you well and earns a decent living why the heck are you comparing where he works and why? I guess i'm just older and wiser, because i would never relate a man to his job, thank god he's got a job, but i will relate him to how he treats me. That my dear is the most important thing!

I was just having this discussion with my hubby about why some people think they can actually date people who are SOOOO much more visibly attractive than them... I mean, come on, usually if someone is out of my league, I recognize it and move on.

But this particular guy I know, who's a nice enough guy but 5'2" and bald at 28, hits on 5'8" hot blonde chicks all the time and then wonders why nobody will go out to him...

Like you said, confidence is great, but PHULEEEEZE!!

You certainly put that in perspective!

Perhaps her motive is to meet a guy who will inspire her for better? Just thinking outside the box. If she meets someone who is basically on her level where does that put her? Then again, she actually thinks Boscovs is above Walgreens (or was it Walmart). Okay, if she were a M.A.C. makeup artist in the mall, I could get that, becuse it's not just really retail but also make up artistry but here they both sell discounted, less expensive items! My thoughts- if you want to attract a certain type perhaps you have to be a certain type too or will meeting a shoe salesman who works at Nordstroms be acceptable for her? That's a step up!

I see your girlfriend is a "legend in her own mind"! People like that can be exhausting!

Anonymous said...

I agree with you! And Boscov's? Really? I think I'd rather work at Walgreens. And really, it's all retail. A store is a store is a store. Who really accepts a job according to the name of a place? When I worked in retail, I would apply at 10 of them and work wherever I was accepted.

Vixen said...

But the question should be who won the most "employee of the month" awards?

Freckle Face Girl said...

I worked with a girl like that. She was a 30 year old single mom & the receptionist and was so proud of the fact that she worked in an office. She wouldn't date anyone working for a "lower establishment" no matter what position. CRAZY!

Oh yes, the famous retail food chain, they talk about it in science magazines. They also say that some of the layers of the food chain suffer from delusion. This is a classic example ;-)

BTW, this is my first visit to your blog - love your blog design!
