I have to get this off my chest

I have to get this off my chest. I was reading a blog this morning lambasting the coverage that Michael Vick is receiving regarding this dog fighting ring. Apparently this person compares this media coverage to the lack of coverage and outrage regarding abortions.

WTF!!!?? Am I missing something? What the hell does fighting dogs have to do with abortions? The author of this blog mentions her indignation that people are not more up in arms about the abortion issue. You have got to be kidding me. The two have no comparability.

The abortion issue has raged for many years. It’s not a new issue so the media is not going to shine a light on it at this moment until something happens to bring it to the forefront.

This Michael Vick issue is something that recently transpired so it is in our immediate consciousness.

Just because people are up in arms and outraged at dog fighting does not mean those same people would not be as upset about mistreatment of children. When the public hears about a case of mistreatment of children we are equally as disturbed. Come on now.

I feel strongly about this case because it hurts my very core when animals are hurt, maimed or killed. Animals are living, breathing creatures and they feel pain just as we do so it will never be ok to intentionally hurt one of them.

That’s just how I feel.

I don’t think he should go to jail behind this necessarily but stiff fines and community service working with animal or animal rights organizations would be appropriate in my opinion.

The same level up indignation and alarm is felt when I hear of parents abusing or killing a child. That hurts to my very core as well. It troubles me for quite sometime as a matter of fact.

The two issues can not be compared in my opinion.

Sorry I can not link to this bloggers post for but they have expressed their desire to not be linked too. :(

Hmmm...both issues deserve coverage, but I agree, I don't think you can compare the two.

I do believe that sometime people seem to care more about animals than the babies dying everyday though.

Good Topic!! Nice Blog!!

Aww Diva! Tell 'em how you really feel!

I am so sick of the MV thang because this is what it has turned into, a conversation about dogs and babies. I don't get it. MV did a crime now he gotta do the time (in my best rip Cochran voice). Period.

Let's just pray that he (and the black men that look up to him) make better choices when given a situation such as this.

abortion and dog fighting? that's a big stretch.

glad you got to vent!

You raised a lot of issues...

#1: Media - The media sucks! It is biased...I avoid it!

#2: Animal rights vs. Human Rights - I am not a fan of killing and beating dogs...but when it comes to animal testing...I support it. Kill a lab rat...save a child!

#3: Abortion - totally not related to animal rights...and i agree...that just b.c there is media coverage about this and not abortion...just measn that it is NEWS...new information!

WOW.. so how does this relate to abortion?? WOW..

ok so she wanna talk about Human Rights vs. Animal Rights..

How about we talk about Jena 6??? yeah take an issue with that rather than abortion..

Ummmm...dog fighting vs. abortion...WTF!

Anywoo...I was just having this discussion (Michael Vic, not abortion) yesterday, and you & I are on the same page. I don't think jail time is an appropriate punishment, especially seeing as how, while I don't approve, dog fighting is common in urban communities & I truly think he was ignorant to the repercutions of his actions.

Like you, I suggested a fine and DEFINATELY community service working with the ASPCA or a kennel would be a much more appropriate punishment.

I think each issues has a time and a place. I'm pretty much tired of hearing about it I mean it is what it is...

The media is gonna make big what they want..that's all

Well, the two issues are similar to some people. Both are about violent death and such. But nothing really big has happened recently on the abortion issue that I am aware of. Maybe there was something I didn't know about on this blog, but MV had to go to court this week so that's why dog fighting is on the news.

Here's a bit of news that is not really about the abortion issue, but remotely linked to it. Jane Roe of Roe vs. Wade recently got a death threat. People try to kill the woman once in a while, so getting a death threat tends to upset her and she always takes it seriously and calls the police and the FBI and anyone else she can think of.

This time she got an email from someone claiming to be a hitman. Supposedly, someone had hired him to kill her, but he thought he'd give her a break and if she would pay him the money instead then he wouldn't kill her, and he'd tell her who wanted her dead.

Turns out this is just an email scam that's been going around. You just get an email claiming that someone's trying to hire a hitman, but if you pay the money instead then you don't get killed and you find out who wants you dead bad enough to pay someone to kill you. It's just sent to random email addresses. They probably don't know anything about you. They probably didn't know this woman was Jane Roe. But now the FBI is involved, so maybe they'll catch these people.

So I expect people will start talking about abortion just a little bit if this story gets around, but not much.

All I can say is guess that's what blogs are for, so we can express our views, opinions and beliefs freely.

I agree with you, they are two separate issues and can't be compared side by side.

Huh? I was hoping you would post the link because I'd like to understand how/why she thinks the two are related.

I love dogs. Shoot, I've owned a Maltese for over 6 years and she's like a member of my family. But damn if I aint tired of hearing about MV and this case.

i completely agree...it's apples and oranges if you ask me...completely incomparable...i'm as outraged as the next guy over the MV thing, but not as outraged as i am over the local story about a woman taking her newborn to mcdonalds and trying to flush him down the toilet...good lord!

Sure makes for good thinking.

I think Michael Vick should go to jail and not ever be allowed to play football ever again.

When did we start only caring about one issue, that one being the "issue of the moment." I would say to the person who is concerned about the reprehensible practice of abortion, where is she on Darfour? We has humans create far too many problems for each other and ourselves. The players, the severity and the prevelance of such things will always dictate the media portrayal of it. If SHE was fighting dogs, she probably wouldn't have even been caught, let alone have this turn into the media circus it's become. It's because it involves a celeb. Who ever heard or talked about dog fighting before this? Yes it existed, but it was top of mind for no one. Now it is...until the next thing.

I agree - abortion, pit-bulls? Please connect the dots here for me. I do however believe that cruelty to animals derserves jail time.

That's all I have to say about that...

Good post.

I'm with Sizzle... it IS a stretch. Both issues are important but just because they are both important doesn't mean they lend themselves easily for comparison. Glad you got to say what you feel!

Well said (as always) Diva.

Sadly, there will always be people that latch on to whatever the hot topic is as a way to call attention to their cause. But please, please continue to call them out when they do so.

I agree its like apples and oranges. I feel that abortion should be,_________________!!!!! However I feel that dog fighting issue is wrong and hurting a poor defenseless animal is just sick and inhumane. I feel that anyone who could hurt an animal could hurt a human. Abortion, is a touchy subject. Some feel it’s the woman’s right to choose other think it’s a blessing and it should be pro-life.

I don’t think either one is wrong, I believe both to be right. However I never went on a side.

Good Blog, DIVA!!!!
