The Longest Ride Ever

Ok, As you all know I live in Baltimore MD (well a suburb northwest of the city actually). Tomorrow I need to visit a client site for their health benefits fair. My boss and I are going. The benefits fair is in Vienna VA. VIENNA VA!! That's 2 hours away.

My boss offered to pick me up so that we can ride together. I like my boss. I really do. But what the hell are we going to talk about in the car....just the two of us.......for 2 freaking hours!!!??

I mean honestly. I see the conversation going something like this....."It's a beautiful day isn't it?" "Yes it is but we do need rain." "Yes we do but I hate rainy days." "Yeah...I see what you mean." "Yeah... a drag." "Yeah...." That can only carry you for so far.

After that.... **SILENCE**

What the hell am I supposed to do tomorrow? HELP!!!!

If isn't rude, bring something to read?

Otherwise, if it is a place you have not gone to before, you might be enjoying the scenery. Especially if the fall colors are starting.

Damn...sounds like it's going to be awkward as hell.

I say you pretend you're not feeling that well. [Say you have a headache **if you will**]

That way, your boss might be less inclined to talk as much.

Oh no!!!!! I hate alone time with the boss. It's the WORST! I get nervous when he walks by my desk and I have to talk to him for like a minute. Good lord, I could never do a two hour ride. Poor thing. Tell us how it turns out.

So sorry. I remember having to do short rides with my boss. They were misery! I totally feel your pain. I agree with dmarks - enjoy the scenery and day dream. At least you won't have to drive.

sleep.

that's what i would do.

but i can fall asleep anywhere.

better to do it in the car with the boss than at my desk in the office...least that's what i think.

bring music. or comedy. fill the silence!

As soon as you get in the car, drop the disclaimer. Tell your boss you almost didn't make the meeting b/c you didn't get any sleep b/c you weren't feeling well. That way you can lay back and close your eyes and they'll understand. Otherwise you can talk about traffic cause you'll damn sure be in it. :) On the way back. talk about the fair.

oh no! don't you mean 4 hours? 2 there and 2 back (sorry for pointing that out). Music and sleep are the best suggestions. Good luck!

2 hours there and 2 hours back.

Sounds like you need a 4 hour audio book.

Or two 2 hour audio books.

Being October, I wanted to list to the War of the Worlds broadcast, but I couldn't find one for the CD player. We ended up listening to Alien Voices--The Invisilbe Man. That had Leonard Nimoy, John DeLancie and other Star Trek actors. It wasn't bad.

Load up the Ipod and go to sleep..I do when I'm on the train.

Two words: Talk Radio. Yes it's boring, but at least someone will be speaking.

I drive almost two hours to a few of the offices I support. It's not nearly as bad when you do it alone.

I HATE riding with the "Boss." I suggest that you tell everyone to contact him/her with every little issue in the office. Perhaps, the cell phone will save you.

'So... what are your sexual preferences...' there's an opener for you!

Music. That's it.

The radio will be your third friend. Start by asking if you can turn it on (don't just assume) or if it's already on, just go with it - between any morning shows (news! gossip! weather!) and music, it will make any otherwise awkward silences seem nonexistant.

Having come off of a 2 day road trip with two folks on my team... find out what he/she is interested in, fake interest, and let 'em talk the rest of the way.

I'm a talker myself, so anyone picking me up pretty much dreads riding with me (or at least I would if I rode with me...I think....)

As for us, I only hang with geeks and we talk about star trek and weird Al.

Don't look at this as torture, this is a divine opportunity to find out what makes the boss tick, what they think etc. Might be awkward, but 2 hrs in a car just might be fairly enlightening.

Chin up!

Pageant Mom said...

p.s. btw starting OUT with a book is extremely rude. Only if they don't seem to be interested in conversation is it acceptable to break out the reading material.

Anonymous said...

hahah, oh how I hate those awkward conversations.

Do you know what your boss is into outside of work? hobby? books? films?

ergh. I'm exhausted just trying to entertain her and I dont' have to even go on the trip.

my sympathies. hope it isnt' tooooo bad.

Ann(ie) said...

ugh. I detest THOSE conversations. I would probably just nervously babble and he'd end up tossing me out of the car. might be win/win???

dmarks said...

reading the later comments, the Pageant Mom situation is best: if it is someone who loves Star Trek and Weird Al, a two-hour car ride would go by like nothing.

Laughingattheslut's idea? Audiobooks with Spock and Q? Can't go wrong there either.

yikes! i got nuttin'! hope it wasn't too painful! :D

i think you should sexually harass your boss for the whole trip.

Adrianne said...

Tell your boss that you admire their work ethic and you want to bask in the silence for two hours to think of more opportunities on how to be more like them. Does that help?

How was the ride????? ;)
